1) Use Your Keyword In Your H1 Headings
Let's look at the purpose of H1 tags, why they are important, and how to use them properly for maximum effect.
What's the purpose of an H1 tag?
H1 tags are found in the background HTML of your website. The "H" stands for heading.
Put simply, it should be the first heading of your page. Typically, they are the largest heading on a page.
Combined with H2, H3, and H4 tags, they tell search engines what a page is about.
Why are H1 tags important?
H1 tags play an incredibly important role in SEO.
Again, they are important because they tell search engines the general subject of your website in a structured way. This allows search engines to properly classify your website among the millions of others.
Search engines will give the most weight to the H1 heading in terms of importance. Other subsequent headings will complement the H1 and provide more content to what the page is about.
How can you get the most from your H1? Use your primary keyword in the H1 tag.
Because it gets the most weight, your keyword has to be there.
Don't forget that these headings aren't just for search engines. First and foremost, they are for readers.
Generally speaking, the H1 will summarize what your page is about at first glance.
So make sure that your keyword is used naturally. If it looks fishy, readers will know and you'll lose trust.
2) Make Sure Your Page Has Images, Graphics, and Videos
Why are images, videos, and graphics important?
These elements are one of the best ways to engage users.
Google loves engagement. It tells Google that people are finding the information they want.
Content that is deep will have better engagement.
What do we mean by deep content?
We mean that it gives people the most information possible in the most understandable way possible.
We all know that when visuals are available, people get a better understanding of the material.
Visuals enhance your written content. Let's be honest, no one wants to read a big block of text. Would you read this page to the end if it was only words on a page? Probably not.
In addition, visuals will show up in Google image searches and Google video searches respectively. You want to be in as many places as possible.

How can you incorporate these elements?
As you're writing your content, think about what visuals you can provide that will help the reader understand better.
If you're explaining what black mold looks like, show it as well.
If you're describing your mold removal process, show a clip of your team at work. You don't need some over the top production. Just simple, helpful images like the one below.
If you have an older website, refreshing your images is a great way to keep your content up to date.
Used correctly, video can be an extremely powerful form of content and provide a significant boost to your overall SEO strategy.
Video helps by combining multiple visual elements with audio.
It helps build a more personal connection to the user because you're speaking directly to them.
A message from the owner or a few video testimonials can build trust in a truly magical way.
3) Use LSI Keywords In Your Content
Let's quickly define what LSI keywords are, how they are used, and why you should use them on your mold remediation website.
What are LSI keywords? LSI stands for latent semantic indexing.
LSI keywords are simply other keywords that are related to or similar to your target keyword. They more holistically describe your page in context. Think of it like a big web of words, connected to each other.
We're not talking about synonyms. If you thought you could go right to a Thesaurus, put a pause on that.
Conceptually, some terms that would help describe mold remediation are terms like "disaster restoration", "restoration companies", and "water restoration." Notice how these phrases don't mean the same thing. They more broadly describe the service and industry.

How are LSI keywords used?
They are used by search engines to help them understand different webpages thematically. This allows them to serve up the best information to users because they understand the intent behind the search.
Now only the most useful results are shown to a searcher.
Why should you use them?
In short, because you pretty much have to if you want to rank in Google. You can't keyword stuff anymore. You can't have a 500-word website anymore.
You have to have extremely helpful, extremely relevant content that search engines and users can understand.
You have to address searches holistically.
Where do you find these mysterious LSI keywords?
Our friend Google will tell you.
Type in your keyword into Google and notice what the autosuggestions are.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and look at related searches.
Congratulations! You now have a collection of LSI keywords that you can add to your mold removal website.

4) Take Advantage of Google Page Speed Insights
Back in 2018, Google introduced its PageSpeed Insights tool which measures page speed with real data from the Chrome Browser. It's a free tool that absolutely anyone can use.
Why use PageSpeed Insights? Remember, Googles wants to give searchers a good user experience. What's one of the annoying internet experiences?
A slow-loading website. Most people won't wait for a website to load for longer than 3 seconds. If it doesn't load, people will leave.
If people start leaving quickly, it tells search engines that your site is terrible. You can say goodbye to the chance of ranking in search.

How do you use PageSpeed Insights?
- Go to PageSpeed Insights
- Enter your website URL
- The tool provides a score that summarizes the loading speed
- Review the tips to improve your score.
- Run the tool a few times to ensure you get a consistent result.

It really is that easy. This is one of the most important steps to help you analyze and improve your website performance.
This is also a great opportunity to talk about a quick SEO best practice. If Google gives you a tool and tells you to use it, you should probably use it. Don't poke the bear by ignoring them.
5) Hack The Word Count of Your Competitor's Website
Word count is another important metric that goes into the overall SEO algorithm.
Why word count even matters?
As we talked about earlier, search engines love deep content.
Deep content has a high correlation to the length of the content. That's because, in order to describe something in-depth, you usually have to use a lot of words to do it.
So, if your website covers a topic in-depth, search engines will recognize that it's extremely helpful to readers.
A word of caution:
Search engines like Google aren't stupid. You can't throw 2,000 words of gibberish onto your website and expect good things to happen. You'll likely see the opposite effect if you try to be cute.
Why do you need to know your competitor's word count?
There is not a perfect word count for ranking. Knowing your competitor's word count gives you a benchmark.
If you want to rank for "mold removal company Atlanta" and all of your competitors have a 1,000 word page, you know that at a minimum you need a 1000-word page to compete. You probably need at least that to compete.
So how can you hack the word count of your competitors?
We suggest using a chrome extension called Keywords Everywhere.
All you have to do is enter a search phrase into Google and hit enter. Each result will now display the word count found on the page.
In less than 10 seconds you can quickly see your competitor's word count. Now you know EXACTLY how many words your website needs to be to rank on the first page.
6) Fix Broken Links
There are a number of reasons why you'll want to fix broken links.
First, broken links are a bad user experience.
Have you ever visited a website, found the information you needed, clicked the link, and ended up on a broken page? It's a terrible user experience.
That link is supposed to be a pathway to more information. Information that you care about. Broken links are like roadblocks along that beautiful pathway.

Second, internal links are a way to pass link equity across your pages.
If you have a page that is ranking very well, getting lots of traffic, and thought well of by search engines that page is very authoritative.
When you link to another page of your website, you're passing some of that authority to the next page.
If your link is broken, that whole strategy just went out the window.
Third, links are a ranking factor
They provide search engines with relevancy signals. If you link out to an industry resource, search engines will relate your website to theirs. Think of all the different resources you could link out to.
- Government websites discussing mold
- Industry organizations discussing certifications
- Insurance companies discussing homeowner coverages
- Health websites discussing the adverse effects of mold.
- Equipment manufacturers
- Review sites
You can see how quickly search engines would be able to make connections about your company.
If you neglect to link out to other websites, you make it that much harder for search engines to figure you out.
7) Have A Creative 404 Page
What is a 404 page?
A 404 page is the page you land on when the original page you looked for isn't available.
Are 404 pages bad for SEO?
Actually no. 404 pages provide an indirect SEO benefit because they add to a great user experience. They are also there for a reason.
They are to inform users that the page they were looking for is no longer available.
But what happens next?
How can you have a 404 page that adds to the user experience? Take a look at Hubspot's 404 Page
- Don't just send your visitors back to the home page - Offer them alternatives, perhaps a list of your core services, a helpful article, or your most interesting blog posts.
- Stay on brand - Keep the experience consistent with the rest of your site. If your brand generally carries a serious tone, don't use this opportunity to be funny.
- Keep the design consistent - You want your 404 to look similar in style to the rest of your website. You don't want your visitors to think they landed on a totally different website.
At the end of the day, you don't want people leaving your site just because they landed on a 404 page.
You want them to continue to navigate your site and ultimately get in touch!
8) Create an XML Sitemap
What is an XML Sitemap?
In this case, we'll let the answer come straight from Google.
A sitemap is a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them. Search engines like Google read this file to more intelligently crawl your site.
Sitemaps are a way for you to tell search engines which pages of your site are the most important.
You can also give search engines information about specific content like videos and images. Again this will help them understand the content more wholly.
If you want even more information about what sitemaps are, check out this video.
Should you setup an XML Sitemap?
As we've mentioned before. If Google recommends that you use a particular tool, you'd be wise to listen.
It makes their job easier and allows their bots to quickly get through your website. This is especially important if you have a larger website.
If you have a brand new site, you definitely need a sitemap. If no other websites are linking to you, there is no way for Google's bots to know you exist.
If you followed our advice and added additional page elements like video, images, and graphics you should also use a sitemap. You'll be able to tell Google more about all of these items and give them more of a chance to show up in search.
How do you set up a sitemap?
There are several ways to set up a sitemap for your website. More than likely you'll be following the steps outlined in one of the following articles.
9) Submit Your Sitemap to Google
Now that you've created a sitemap you need to get it to Google. Without that, you haven't done yourself too many favors.
How do you submit your sitemap to Google?
There are several ways to get Google to pick up your sitemap. However, we are going to show you the simplest way.
No coding. No fancy website knowledge is required.
All you have to do is submit your sitemap using Google's Search Console Sitemaps Tool
- Log in to Google Search Console
- Navigate to Sitemaps
- Enter the URL of your Sitemap
10) Keep Your Website Secure
You can keep your website secure by ensuring that your site has an SSL Certificate. It is one of the most important aspects of your website's security.
You can see if a website has this certificate based on the URL. A secure website will start with HTTPS and an unsecured website will say HTTP.
What exactly is an SSL Certificate?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that accomplishes a couple of things.
- It verifies a website's identify
- It encrypts information that gets sent to your website's server.
It's a fancy term for a simple concept:
A tool for keeping your user's information safe.
How do you get an SSL Certificate?
Every major website host offers this certificate to their clients. Rather than attempt to explain every scenario for every web host, here are links for the most popular ones, explaining exactly how to set up your SSL certificate.
Why is SSL important to SEO?
As you can probably guess, the answer again is user experience.
Search engines want to send searchers to websites that they know they can trust.
Have you ever been given a referral to a contractor, supplier, or vendor only to get a terrible experience? Chances are, you won't be taking advice from the person who referred you ever again. You lost trust in the middle man.
This is exactly the same thing.
If search engines start sending people to shady sites that steal information, they'll lose credibility too.
99% of the websites on the first page of a search result have an SSL certificate.
Do you want to be on the first page?
Then make sure your site is secure.
11) Use A CDN
What is a CDN?
A CDN is a "Content Delivery Network." This is a network of servers that work together to get website content to users quickly. The server that is physically closest to the user of the website is the one that gets used.
Again, more technobabble. In short, it gets your website to people faster.
Why are CDNs good for SEO?
CDNs dramatically speed up load time for the end-user. It gives them the best experience possible.
As we already discussed, page speed is a MASSIVE ranking factor.
Do you need a CDN and if so, how do you get one?
Here's the deal:
If you have a small website, probably not. Your website is already lean enough that it doesn't take a lot to deliver the content to a user.
If you're a larger franchisor with a page for each of your franchised locations, yes, you do. (You know who you are). For the sake of all of your franchisees who send you money every year, utilize this resource to boost THEIR revenue.
Dear franchisees, please make sure that your brand takes note of this article.
If you're on a WordPress site, there are numerous plugins that make it incredibly easy to take advantage of a CDN. Here are 5 really popular options.
- MaxCDN
- StackPath
- Sucuri
- Cloudflare
- KeyCDN
If you're using Wix, congratulations! Wix already uses a CDN.
Every other provider has its own nuances to setting up a CDN.
12) Optimize Your Meta Descriptions
What are meta descriptions?
Meta descriptions are an aspect of a website's HTML code that is intended to explain what a webpage is about. This helps both users and search engines get a glimpse into the content, without having to read the whole thing.
You've probably seen them before and didn't even realize it. This is what a meta description looks like.
Do meta descriptions impact SEO?
Yes and no. Meta descriptions aren't much of a direct ranking factor anymore. After years of abuse, the search engines smartened up. You can't put "mold removal" into your description 5 times and expect a positive effect.
Nowadays, meta descriptions have an indirect effect on SEO.
Once again, Google wants to offer users a good experience. Google takes into account things like Click-Through Rate (CTR) to determine how well a search result matches what people are looking for.
Click-Through Rate is simply how many people click on a website compared to how many people saw that result.
If a page is getting a really high CTR, that's a positive sign to search engines.
How can you optimize your meta descriptions?
Keep your meta descriptions short and compelling.
You want to encourage people to click on your website. Briefly tell them what the page is about and use words that entice them to click to get the information best for them.
Here are some things you might include:
- Service area
- Hours of operation (probably 24 hours)
- A blurb about your services
- A star rating
- How long you've been in business
- Your phone number
Check to see what search results look like in your city and then think about what you could do to set yourself apart from the field.
13) Use The Proper Google My Business Category
This may be the most important tip in the entire article.
You cannot rank well in local search results unless you get this right.
What is a Google My Business Category?
If you're unfamiliar with Google My Business please take a look at this page from Google. It will tell you everything you need to know about why Google My Business is important.
When you set up your Business Profile, you're asked to pick a category.
This tells Google what kind of business you have. It also tells Google that you're business is similar to other businesses with the same category.
There are over 4,000 Google My Business categories.

Why GMB categories are so important to SEO.
These categories are important because they are one of the largest ranking factors in local SEO
They govern whether or not your business will be shown in maps when people are looking for "mold removal near me" or anything similar.
What category should you use?
This is the tricky part because there is not a Google My Business category dedicated to mold removal or mold remediation companies.
So, what can you do?
We encourage you to search for "mold removal company in *insert city*." Take a look at what other companies are using.
Note: a lot of the results are using "water damage restoration service."
But you're running a mold remediation company, not a water damage company.
Although you need to use what is best for your particular area you'll most likely want to use the category below.
"Environmental consultant"
In time, Google may provide something that fits your business a little bit better. In the meantime, this is your best bet.

14) Optimize Your Reviews
Why Are Reviews Important?
In this section, we're specifically talking about the reviews in Google My Business. They're another factor incredibly important to local SEO for any mold removal company.
Reviews indicate how popular your business is in the community and what kind of experience you're giving customers.
Both the number of reviews and the rating are important. Both are shown in Google Maps
All things considered equal, a company with more reviews at a higher rating will rank better than a company with either fewer reviews or a lower rating.
How can you optimize reviews?
A lot of companies never focus on this because they think reviews are something that happens naturally.
You get what you get, right? We disagree.
You tend to get what you ask for.
Although you can't change the rating you're given, you can do the following: Influence what people write.
How can you influence what people write in their Google My Business reviews?
Here's what you can do:
When you ask for a review say something like:
If you had an amazing experience with *insert your mold remediation company* we'd love to hear your feedback.
By saying, "if you had an amazing experience" you're subliminally encouraging people to leave a 5-star review. You've planted the seed.
You could also give people examples of what to mention in their reviews. Things like:
- The service they received
- The area they live in
- Was it residential or commercial?
- How quickly a team was able to respond
- Who they dealt with on your team
By encouraging people to mention these things, they'll naturally start including them in their reviews. Google will start associating the content of their reviews with your business.
If reviews talk about your local area, that's great for local SEO. If they talk about a specific mold removal service, That's great for local SEO.
It will do wonders for your local search rankings if you proactively optimize reviews.
15) Get More Reviews
We've already explained why reviews are important to the local SEO performance of your mold remediation company.
We also established that the number of reviews is important.
How can you get more reviews?
We're going to outline 2 different ways that you can get more reviews.
1) Getting more reviews through email
Hopefully, you're already engaging with your customers after your work is complete. A simple thank you email can go a very long way.
When you do email them, why not ask them to leave a review? Encourage them to share their experience with their world.
Google gives you an amazing way to take this even further. Google will hand you a link that you can share directly with customers.
- Log in to Google My Business
- Click "Home" and "Share Review Form"
- Copy the link
Once customers click that link, they'll be taken directly to a place where they can leave a review.
It's a huge time saver, making it more likely that they'll actually share their feedback.
2) Get more reviews through a dedicated thank you page
Setting up a review landing page is a phenomenal way to solicit more reviews.
After customers purchase from you or submit a contact form, send them directly to a page where you request their feedback.
Here's where you apply all the things we just spoke about.
- Ask them to leave a review
- Tell them what to talk about
- Send them to where you want the review
If you apply this step and the one we mentioned previously, you'll end up with a ton of raving reviews with unbelievable SEO value.
16) Interact With Customers
Why is customer engagement important?
We already know that Google loves a good user experience. They also love engagement. Engagement comes in a variety of ways.
Generally speaking, businesses that are constantly interacting with customers are able to provide a better user experience. Engagement is an indication of user experience.
Good user experience = Better rankings
How can you engage with customers?
There are a number of ways that you can engage with customers.
1. Respond to all of your reviews - Good or bad, respond to the reviews, no matter where they are posted
2. Publish posts in Google My Business
3. Take advantage of the Q&A section of Google My Business
4. Posts photos of your team, your services, your office, and anything else that makes you relatable
We can guarantee that your competitors are not doing these things on a regular basis. By having a high rate of engagement, you'll stand out from the crowd, Google will reward you.
17) Your Business Name
This one is a trick that rarely gets talked about. Truth be told, it's a little shady, though totally legal.
We're neither encouraging nor discouraging this. We're bringing it up so that you're aware of what is happening in the marketplace.
Your business name is your business name, or is it?
Have you ever seen companies showing up in Google maps and their name is something like "Mold Remediation Fort Lauderdale?"
Pretty annoying, right?
Naturally, something named "Mold Remediation Fort Lauderdale" is going to rank pretty well locally. How are they doing that?
A lot of companies are filing a DBA (Doing Business As), using a name that will rank well in search results. As long as you have filed a legal DBA you're allowed to use this name in Google My Business.
We're not saying that the business above is doing that. It's purely for illustrative purposes. But you get the point.
Legal? Absolutely. Shady? You better believe it. Effective? Very.
Worth it? That's up to each individual business owner's ethics.
18) Steal Links From Other Mold Removal Companies
This is one of our favorite link building methods for mold removal companies, and disaster restoration companies in general. It's tried and true. It works in every industry. Over and over again.
Here's how you can steal backlinks to bump up your own search rankings.
Let's pretend that you're a mold removal specialist in Frisco, Texas. You recently set up a website and now you're ready to grow. You realize that in order to rank well on Google you'll need backlinks. What do you do?
Start by going to Ahrefs.com. It's a paid SEO tool. One of the best in the industry and well worth the small investment.
Navigate to "Keywords Explorer."
Enter the keyword you want to appear for.
Scroll down to "SERP Overview." You want to look for competitor websites. Ignore sites like. Yelp, BBB, HomeAdvisor. To the right of each website, under "Backlinks", you can see how many backlinks your competitors have.
Clicking on the number under "Backlinks" allows you to see exactly who is linking to your competitor.
In this case, PuroClean is getting a link from this directory. Now you can reach out to that directory, get your name listed, and have the exact same link as PuroClean. Rinse and repeat that process for all your competitors.
19) Find Out What Customers Are Actually Searching For
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could see what people are actually searching for without:
- Guessing
- Doing Surveys
- Trusting Keyword Research Tools
- Asking customers over the phone
Well, it turns out you can.
Made possible by none other than our favorite friend, Google. To access this feature, you'll need to connect Google Search Console to your website.
Login to Google Search Console and select Performance.
Underneath the line graph, you'll see a table. Make sure "Queries" is selected.
On the right-hand side, you'll see a column called "Impressions." This tells you exactly how many times your website is showing up in search results for a given phrase.
Knowing the most popular phrases will help you narrow down your content strategy to focus on the terms that matter most.
20) Fiverr Backlinks For Mold Removal Companies
Fiverr.com has become incredibly popular for getting things done at an incredible price. In many cases, you can get incredible value from freelancers who call Fiverr their home.
Purchasing backlinks from Fiverr is not one of the cases. It's a horrible, terrible idea. Stay away at all costs.
Unknowing business owners flock to Fiverr because they know they need backlinks. However, they don't know how to get them.
A Google search takes them to marketplaces like Fiverr. These sites are full of sellers promising to deliver amazing backlinks for mold remediation companies, for a very small fee. In fact, they claim to work for any business. There are over 12,000 of these services.
DO NOT BUY THESE LINKS
They are traps for your business. The promise of quick success.
In the end, it will hurt your business. Purchasing links is against Google's guidelines. Eventually, they will notice and your website will suffer. Your rankings will drop significantly.
Coming back from that is a long and expensive journey. When it is all said and done, Fiverr links will be the most expensive links you could ever buy.
Don't do that to your business. Hire a professional. Consult an expert.
Link building is important but it must be done the right way.
